The Wesley at Clunes Program Year 9 Boarding

Overview: A Masterclass in Independence

The Clunes program is a prestigious 8-week residential experience at Wesley College where students live away from home in a self-governed community. It is designed to foster maturity, self-reliance, and physical grit—traits that are essential for a successful transition to a US collegiate environment.

Core Pillar 1: Self-Governance & Responsibility

During my 8-week residency, I moved beyond the classroom to manage the complexities of adult life.

  • Household Management: I lived in a shared cottage with eight peers, where we were responsible for our own daily operations.
  • Budgeting: Managed a collective household budget for groceries and utilities, requiring meticulous planning and financial discipline.
  • Domestic Independence: Handled all aspects of meal preparation, laundry, and household maintenance while maintaining a full-time academic and athletic schedule.

Core Pillar 2: Physical & Mental Resilience

The program features a rigorous fitness curriculum designed to push students past their perceived limits.

  • The 15km Challenge Run: I successfully completed the program’s signature endurance event, demonstrating the stamina required for 36-hole tournament days.
  • Elite Fitness Progression: Through daily disciplined training, I progressed from Level 2 to Level 1 (the highest tier) in the physical assessment rankings.
  • Grit: Developed the “never-give-up” attitude that I now apply to my golf game, particularly during high-pressure back-nine situations.

Core Pillar 3: Community & Leadership

Living in a high-stakes communal environment requires emotional intelligence and leadership.

  • Peer Empathy: My residential report highlighted a “genuine empathy for housemates,” noting my ability to support teammates during stressful periods.
  • Conflict Resolution: Developed the communication skills necessary to navigate a team environment, a vital asset for any college golf roster.
  • Accountability: Learned the importance of personal accountability in a shared space—ensuring my responsibilities were met to help the group succeed.

Creative Excellence & Focus]

Award Winner: “Best Craft” (The Golf City Project)

While at Clunes, I channeled my passion for the game into a large-scale creative project. I designed and constructed a “Golf City” entirely out of plywood.

  • The Result: I was honored with the Best Craft Award for the term.
  • The Lesson: This project required weeks of meticulous planning, precision cutting, and patience. I believe the same “builder’s mindset”—attention to detail and persistence—is what allows me to break down my golf swing and rebuild it for high-level competition.

Physical & Mental Resilience

The 15km Challenge Run & Elite Fitness

The fitness curriculum at Clunes is designed to push students to their physical limits.

  • Fitness Tier: Through daily disciplined training, I progressed from Level 2 to Level 1 (Highest Tier).
  • Endurance: Successfully completed the 15km Challenge Run.
  • Relevance to Golf: US college golf often requires 36 holes in a single day. My Clunes training proved I have the stamina and mental “tank” to perform at peak levels during the final holes of a tournament.

Self-Governance & Community]

Domestic Independence & Teamwork

Living in a cottage with eight peers required a level of maturity that most high school students haven’t yet experienced.

  • Household Budgeting: Managed collective funds for groceries and logistics, ensuring the “team” (housemates) was fueled and organized.
  • Household Operations: Handled cooking, cleaning, and maintenance while balancing a full-time academic load.
